As a digital marketing agency, BlakSheep Creative understands the importance of technology in search and rescue efforts.
As a 25-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Fire Department, a member of their Incident Management Team, and the Chief of Information and Technology, I have seen firsthand how technology can help or hinder search and rescue efforts.
I wanted to take some time to explain how we at BlakSheep Creative use technology to support search and rescue missions for Pinnacle Search and Rescue.
The first way we use technology is in our social media monitoring.
We set up Google Alerts for key phrases related to search and rescue and PSAR’s services.
This allows us to see news stories related to search and rescue as they happen.
We can then share these stories on PSAR’s social media channels, which helps raise awareness of the organization and its work.
Another way we use technology is in our website design and development.
We make sure that the PSAR website is optimized for search engines so that people searching for information on search and rescue will be more likely to find the site.
We also design the site to be responsive to be easily accessed on mobile devices.
This is important because people in need of search and rescue services often may not have access to a desktop computer.
We also use technology in a custom email form/Slack channel that we set up for PSAR.
During Hurricane IDA, we provided real-time updates on the mission via the email form/Slack channel. (You can read the case study on our website.)
When someone in the field needed help, they could go to the website, fill out the form, and that would send a message to the Slack channel.
We were then able to relay information back to the field in near real-time, which helped the search and rescue mission be more successful.
Technology is a powerful tool that can help or hinder search and rescue efforts.
When used correctly, it can be a tremendous asset.
