The Importance of Life Jackets (Even While Swimming)

If you live in the Baton Rouge area, you’ve probably heard about the recent drownings in the area. In most cases, the victims were not wearing life jackets. This is a tragic reminder of the importance of life jackets, even while swimming.

With summer in full swing, many families are spending time near the water. It’s important to be aware of the dangers of drowning and take precautions to prevent it.

But, did you know that life jackets aren’t just for swimming? In fact, they are an important safety precaution for any activity near the water, including boating, fishing, and even kayaking.

This blog post will provide an overview of the importance of life jackets and how to select the right one for your family.

Life Jackets Keep you from Drowning.

The most important reason to wear a life jacket is to prevent drowning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4.  The U.S. Coast Guard reported 613 boating-related deaths in 2019—79% of these deaths were drowning-related, and of those who died from drowning, 86% were not wearing life jackets.

So as you can see, wearing a life jacket is one of the best ways to prevent drowning. But what type of life jacket should you choose?

Choosing a Life Jacket

There are many different types and sizes of life jackets available, so it’s important to select one that is appropriate for your child’s weight and height. You can find this information on the label of the life jacket.

It’s also important to choose a life jacket that is approved by the Coast Guard. You can find this information on the label as well.

Some life jackets also have special features, such as reflective strips or whistles. These can be helpful in an emergency situation but are not required.

Life Jackets for Children

There are special life jackets available for children. These are often brightly colored and have cartoon characters on them to make them more appealing to kids.

It’s important to choose a life jacket that fits snugly and doesn’t have any loose straps that could catch on to something and cause the child to drown.

Life Jackets for Adults

Children aren’t the only ones who need life jackets. Adults should also wear life jackets when participating in any water activities.

There are adult-sized life jackets available in a variety of sizes and styles. You can find one that fits snugly and is comfortable to wear.

Again, it’s important to choose a life jacket that is approved by the Coast Guard and the right size for your height and weight.

Don’t forget about Fido! Although your dog can swim, they should also wear a life jacket when near the water.

There are pet-specific life jackets available that will keep your dog safe while swimming or boating. You’ll want to choose a life jacket that fits snugly and has a handle on the back so you can easily lift your dog out of the water.

Some life jackets also have a leash attachment so you can keep your dog close by while swimming.

The Importance of Life Jackets

As you can see, life jackets are an important safety precaution for anyone near the water. Whether you’re swimming, boating, fishing, or kayaking, make sure to wear a life jacket. And don’t forget about your furry friends—pets need life jackets too!
